Question

Mr McClelland (Barton)  asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in writing, on 21 June 2007:

For the month of (a) January, (b) February, (c) March and (d) April 2007, what was the size of Iraqi security forces on duty in Iraq in each of the following roles: (i) general police capability; (ii) national guard capability; (iii) armed forces; and (iv) border patrol; and, in respect of each service listed, what is its stated goal.

Answer

Mr Downer (MayoMinister for Foreign Affairs)—The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

The Iraq Weekly Status Report, published by the Department of State of the United States and which can be accessed at http://www.state.gov/p/nea/rls/rpt/iraqstatus/ provides a breakdown of total trained and equipped Iraq Security Forces. Figures in the format sought in the question are published by the Brookings Institute Iraq Index (page 34) which can be found at http://www.brookings.edu/iraqindex and which refers to the Iraq Weekly Status Report as a reference (page 63).
