Mr McClelland (Barton)  asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in writing, on 21 June 2007:

For the month of (a) January, (b) February, (c) March and (d) April and (e) May 2007, what was the estimated number of extra-judicial killings that occurred in Baghdad?

Mr Downer (Mayo—Minister for Foreign Affairs)—The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

(a)
to (e) The Government remains concerned about the security situation in Iraq. There are no authoritative estimates on the total number of Iraqi civilian casualties, or extra-judicial killings. Estimates, and the methods used to compile them, vary widely.
